Clear Aligners explained
Clear aligners are custom-made plastic trays that fit snugly over your teeth. Each set moves your teeth slightly. After a set period, you change to the next set in the series.
You take them out to eat and clean your teeth. To work properly they need to be worn most of the day, so they suit people who can stick to a routine.
Benefits
- Barely visible when worn
- Removable for eating and brushing
- No brackets or wires to rub
- Treatment is planned digitally in advance
When it may help
- Mild to moderate crowding
- Small gaps between your teeth
- Teeth that have shifted after braces
- You'd prefer not to wear visible braces
What happens during treatment
- 1
Check suitability
We examine your teeth and let you know whether aligners will work for you.
- 2
Scan and plan
Your teeth are scanned or measured, and the movements are planned.
- 3
Wear your trays
You change to each new set as instructed and come in for reviews.
- 4
Retain
Retainers keep your teeth in their new position when treatment ends.
Will it hurt?
You may feel pressure for a few days after changing to a new set. This usually means the trays are working, and it soon eases.
After your treatment
- Wear your aligners for the number of hours your dentist advises, often 20 to 22 hours a day
- Clean your trays and brush your teeth before putting them back in
- Drink only plain water while wearing them
